What an excellent review. It must have taken hours of research. I love reading about these applications now but only since we started to use Dooster which we love. The iphone app is fine and customer service and security are very good. Best of all Dooster has made communication much easier for us.

and you can store (backup) raw files (for an added though low fee) and they’ll associate it with the corresponding jpg (if any)

If you are using gmail (web) there is very nice tool called: manymoon. From your email client in the web you can create tasks and assign them.
Also producteev I believe can do similar stuff, but not integrated with gmail.
Online tools there are many:
-TaskAnt
-Teamly (I like it…)
-Kohive
-Toodledo (the one I use with 2Do for iPad and iPhone)
…/…
If what you want is an offline tool, then it is more difficult. I am not that familiar but check (for Mac):
-Things
-Omnifocus
And of course the app and program I use the most and works with Mac, PC, iPhone, iPad and online, is a multipurpose that could be use as a task manager: Evernote. (you have shared notebooks)
Evernote is by far my favorite. The downside is that you cannot set due dates, a big flaw.

Thank you for a thorough review of todo apps.
I’m also still looking for one solution for my modest need:
Todo app that will be synchronized with my pc (outlook or google apps) and that enable me to delegate tasks to other people in my team, enabling them to report on task completion.
It must be some kind of an online service, it will probably not be sync with google tasks since their task service is very basic and has no full API so it leaves us with sync to outlook tasks.
I’m not trying to manage large projects but only simple list of tasks.

Have you run into such a service since the time you wrote this
review?

A 10mm always distorts!!
The effect is nice but what I do is, in case of shooting architecture, correct the distortions using DxO (http://www.dxo.com).
For Lens distortion see the examples:

There is alternative for geetasks which is free for google apps tasks. GoTasks. As good or even better and GeeTasks. Available for iPad too, and offline working.

I suggest you guys check out Dooster. I have been using it for a while now and it combines all my emails and tasks in one easy use package. They don’t currently have an iphone app but they say it should be ready within the next two weeks. Once it has that it will be near as damn it perfect. http://www.dooster.net

@zarch if you starting to shot RAW now space required is going to be multiplied by 2.5 so you should start looking for an unlimited space offer.
That is why I chose flickr, but I still don’t like it (not keeping the folder structure I have in my computer).

-I shot RAW and I keep it.
-In parallel, I create JPEG using DxO (which corrects lenses defaults).
Now I have two identical trees of photos, one RAW one JPEG.
-Then a third tree with Ligthroom modification (this is just a selection).

In flicker I upload the DxO JPEGs (more than 150Gb now…).

Ideally I would love to use Picasa, and just switch the sync button… but when you have a lot of photos space becomes expensive.

Now, where do you back up the RAW… good question.

Since last November I am using crashplan. It back all my computers (all of them) including my RAW files.
So far I have uploaded 450Gb. Still a lot to be done. It is a question of months…

Sometimes I think I would be better with a NAS synology DS1511+ and an offsite back up with a second unit… but it is expensive…

Exactly the same boat there. Got 40gb of old JPG all in Picasa, but just started shooting RAW on new camera.

Need to process them through Lightroom, but seems a faff having to do all these steps

Import into LR (and convert NEF to DNG)
PP
Output to JPG
Import into Picasa on PC
Sync albums

I suppose as Picasa can handle DNG I could do something with those rather than converting to JPG?

Don’t know….. Stuck how to move forward….

I gotta say, I’m in the same boat as you, except I’m already waist deep invested in Flickr. I use Lightroom for all my work flow, Picasa to view, and Flickr to share and store. I don’t like the fact that I can’t sync any changes with Flickr since I’m constantly adding and editing tags. Any changes I make to the pictures, I must painstakingly go through my entire work flow to locate the specific pictures, which is prone to mistakes. Also, I don’t like Flickr changing the filenames of my pictures. It’s not a true backup copy of my photos since I can’t restore the exact structure of my organization.
The most ideal would prob be an integration of Lightroom and Picasa for instant sync and share.

I agree 100% with you Dani. I find it completely ridiculous that any of these companies have not nailed a complete solution. It is not rocket science, it is only a To-Do application. I came across this great post after trying at least 5 different task programs, with each one, I was conforming to it instead of it conforming to me. I’ve had a similar problem when I was setting up our CMS, CRM, Accounting and E-Commerce solutions for our business, nothing seemed to play nice.

Its not a sync switch as per Picasa application, but you can export from iPhoto into web albums – also I discovered you can use iPhoto without storing all pictures in a single Library file.

I am not asking for a custom prefect product.
I just ask for desktop (Mac/PC client), with and iPhone app and a website. Like you have for your calendars and for your emails: outlook, with email client in your phone plus webmail.
Is this asking too much?
No one has this…. and it is pretty unbelievable.
I thought the one was EasyTask but the web client is just useless, no edit or add tasks…

Some of my users have the option.
I don’t. But my inbox is always trying to be at zero so there is no need of priority inbox for me… so they don’t offer it…

I found out why I got the message with trying to log in on my iphone 3gs with 3.1.2 Facebook app: “unable to connect to facebook please try later iphone”
The problem is for jailbroken phones using biteSMS or iPhoneDelivery (the one I use to know when SMS are delivered).
If you remove this, it works. Petty I could not find a work around.

Well, I updated the iPhone app, and there was an error. I logged out and now I cannot log in again.
I read they are rolling this out progressively.
For what I’ve seen, this is going to be big. RIP foursquare and Gowalla….

Wow. What can we say this is great ! Since adding 2-way video calling on iPhone 4 yesterday we have seen another huge jump in fring video calling. As even more fringsters video call their friends on Android, Nokia and iPhones, we have seen some network ‘stress’ (as the techies are telling me). Here some reported bugs for iOS4:
1.- Photos synced with iPhoto turn are extremely blurry
2.- Gmail ActiveSync is no longer functioning (no syncing of email, calendars and contacts) Update from BG: This probably has nothing to do with iOS 4.0 and more to do with Google being overwhelmed.
3.- Update deletes all contacts, and backups will not restore them
4.- MMS no longer works
5.- Push notifications not functioning
6.- Auto-lock is set at one minute and the option to change this is greyed out
Update fails and device reboots endlessly

Just copy this in the desktop (Mac), switch off you iPhone 3GS (ONLY VALID FOR 3GS), Open iTunes, hold power and home button until you are in recovery mode, then hold OPTION key while you click on restore, select the file in the desktop and voila!

I gave a try a try to flickr. SInce the 26th May I am uploading photos.
I have to say I regret it a bit, the reason being that it is like if I am dropping all my photos to a bucket, which will be impossible to sort.
For the time being I just want to finish the upload, but I have the feeling that flickr will only be useful for me from now onwards where when uploading I can create sets and tag and classify stuff.
For my 150Gb of photos… I still don’t know how I’m going to manage.
I am testing a mac program called flickery but pages, like in flickr are only containing few photos. I would love to have a single page with all of them…

Regarding @Matt’s issues with PicasaWeb if you use the picasa software, and you choose picasa as your default instead of iPhoto, removing the photos from where iPhoto is saving them, then you will see each album/event has a sync switch. Then is easy, you can just sync the web with your picasa.
Problems of doing this?
Well, iPhoto is completly integrated in the Mac OS… when uploading photos to an email, or selecting photo types… while picasa is not. I don’t know if I would be ready for this sacrifice.

Hi,
I use PicasaWeb to backup my 5 gigs of photos. I found a Python script online that uploaded all of the photos at once, from the Apple command line.

But I am a little worried. I recently noticed that one of the albums, of several dozen, was missing. I tried this from multiple computers (and an iPhone), both logged in, logged out, and with the browsers cache and cookies reset. The album just wasn’t there.

Then I found that I had emailed a link to the album to my parents. I clicked on that link and — voila — the album magically reappeared.

I think they had some data consistency error– where the album and photos were still there, but somehow wasn’t linked to whatever database controls the main page. And that viewing the album directly somehow relinked it to the main page.

But anyways, I am no longer confident that PicasaWeb, by itself, is a perfect backup. I don’t know if it lost any other album, or if this one time was just a fluke. If I hadn’t noticed it missing and didn’t have the direct link to it it would have been gone.

So I am looking for a second web album to serve as a true backup.

Maybe the solution is flickr and backblaze: Two backups of my jpgs, on backup (on backblaze) of my raw, and a online gallery with videos and photos to use from now onwards (so I don’t have to do the sets faces and so…
This solution would be 75$ a year… mmm….
